We Didn’t Come Here to Be Pretty
“We didn’t come here to be pretty, however, we women all feel pushed by society to transform into objects of desire until we realize we didn’t come here to be pretty. At that moment our guard drops and reveals inner feelings of frustration, strength, anger, resignation, and so many other emotions I intend to capture for this show’s paintings.” - Charlotta Janssen on works in her series.
This series of illustrations developed as a collaboration by Charlotta Janssen and author, Loki Mulholland, for a children's book on Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, a white teenager in the south during segregation who put herself on the front lines of the Civil Rights struggle.
