MURALS

BY CHARLOTTA JANSSEN

These larger than life murals were painted by Charlotta Janssen in 2019. Inspired by the miniature 16th century Flemish illustrations by Joris Hoefnagel, the botanical and zoological subjects are painted in Janssen’s signature eye catching color palette and only after several glances does one notice the suggestive fruits and nonsensical Latin throughout the painting.

Oil, Acrylic, Iron Oxide & Collage on Canvas

(These striking murals on canvas come with a detachable frame in order to be attached to various wall and ceiling surfaces.)

CHARLOTTA JANSSEN:

Charlotta Janssen was born in Maine to German parents living in America under the Marshall plan. In 1973, her family moved to Iran, which they later fled during the revolution in 1979. Back in Germany, Janssen studied painting at the University of Arts in Berlin from 1986-1989. She later dropped out and traveled the world as a street musician and performance artist. In 1991, Janssen picked up her brushes again and started organizing art shows wherever she traveled. In 1995 she moved to New York, and in 2000, opened a restaurant to showcase her work in Brooklyn. In 2005, Charlotta Janssen started to narrow down her color spectrum to teal, white, black and rust. In 2009 she reintroduced collage and this element created a real conversation that keeps evolving.
